Ben Young Sculpture: When Form Meets Function
In case you haven't heard, Ben Young is the man. Hailing from Mount Maunganui, New Zealand the self taught artist has been working with glass for 15 years. A surfer by hobby and boat builder by trade, much of his influence comes from the ocean and shines through in his compelling art.
Each of his sculptural works are hand drawn, hand cut and handcrafted from clear sheet float glass, then laminated layer by layer to create it's final form. The hard part he clams comes during the planing process. "I do a lot of thinking before I even start to draw or cut". Most impressively is the fact that the pieces are constructed of both glass and concrete, adding a extra uniqueness and textural appeal.
